Where is Bangkok’s main nightlife area? If you lived in the 90s, the answer would exclusively be Royal City Avenue or RCA. But thanks to the fast development, nighttime entertainment seems to be present in every nook and cranny of the capital. So, does the RCA stand the test of time and remain the heart of Bangkok’s night party?

Bangkok’s rapid urbanization proved to be too much for Royal City Avenue. RCA Bangkok has lost its title of the main nightlife area to those of Thong Lor, Sukhumvit 11, Khao San Road., and the like. However, the evidence of its glory still stands. Clubs, bars, and party venues from the 90s remain to this day.

But what does that mean for a foreign traveler like you? Can you still have a great time at RCA in 2023 and the future? Read on and find out.

What makes (or made) RCA the main Bangkok nightlife attraction?

As mentioned, Royal City Avenue was THE destination for Thai party-goers in the 90s. It was titled to be the only area in Bangkok where you can drink, dance, and date without a care in the world.

Clubs and bars, like on other night streets in the present, are packed in the area. People would dress up and hop from one drinking spot to another. Neon lights and music brought the night to life and kept everyone energetic. It was nothing like other spots in the capital.

Unfortunately, that liveliness didn’t last. Here is the story that makes and breaks Thailand’s most popular clubbing site.

An uncertain beginning

At first glance, you might have noticed one thing about RCA. The area’s name and its entertainment-focused character have nothing to do with each other. Nothing is so royal about nightlife (at least in local’s logic).

But if you dig down a bit of history, the name will make more sense.

In the 80s, Royal City Avenue was meant to be a shopping area. They had planned to showcase imported brand-name products there for nobles and the wealthy to visit and make purchases. Hence the “royal” part — kind of.

However, the dream was too ambitious. Thailand at that time was not ready enough to magically transform an empty land into a high-end downtown. Thus, the project was thrown out the window. (Source)

However, some big businesses had already pre-invested and couldn’t pull their break. So they still leave their shop open there. As a result, the area was known for cars and motorcycle showrooms. But that didn’t last long either.

The unexpected turn

Thanks to its location in the capital’s center, RCA still attracted all kinds of investors. And one of those groups happened to be nightclub owners. (Source)

Thai people of that time would say, “Clubs, pubs, and bars popped up like mushrooms” (a Thai saying comparing quick growth in number to the growth rate of fungus groups).

Among the many venues, Old Leng saw the most success. It was one of the first pubs in RCA. Its distinguishing character was the Chinese tea parlor interior mixed with Elvis music. In a short time, Old Leng became famous enough to make its name synonymous with the street.

Everyone wanted to go to Old Leng to drink and party. After all, there was nowhere else like this at that time.

However, Old Leng alone wasn’t enough.

Every night, Old Leng would be packed and full in minutes after opening. So, the nearby venues were responsible for welcoming the “leftover” customers. One such place was Route 66.

Route 66 was basically the number 2 in the area. All the late party-goers recognized this place as their meeting spot. After all, they couldn’t expect to find a seat in the oh-so-famous Old Leng.

The two pubs carried the reputation of RCA to its peak. Thousands of people flock to this little street every night to let loose. Teenagers of that time (mostly in their 50s now) named such a prime time as the Old Leng & Route 66 era.

The unfortunate fall

Another selling point of RCA is its tenacity. This little street has seen its ups and downs in the short span between the 90s and the present (2023).

Businesses came and went as the economy rose and fell. Not to mention the disastrous time of the bubble in the late 90s. However, RCA withstood all of those and maintained its entertainment characteristics. The locals even said that “RCA never dies.”

However, every party has to end. And RCA eventually crumbled under the new entertainment venue law. (Source)

There are lots of details in this law. But the nitty-gritty is the 2:00 a.m. closing time and frequent police check on drugs. The former limited the income flow of businesses, while the latter made things difficult.

Not to say that this law makes no sense whatsoever. Entertainment venues were known for excessive drug and substance use at that time. The government wanted to “polish” the face of the country. So, this new law was written to exterminate the root of the problem (or so they believed).

Unable to adapt, many businesses closed down for good, never to return. At first, some places try to work around the schedule change. However, the police raid proved to be too much. Even though there was no drug use, the frequent visit of the police devastated their reputation. So they gave up.

Nowadays, RCA is but a remnant of what it used to be. The locals don’t go there anymore. They opt to party in newer nightlife areas around Bangkok. Those who still visit RCA are mostly foreigners.

Where to party in RCA Bangkok?

As mentioned, RCA now is but a shadow of its glorious self. (Especially after COVID.) Time has taken its toll. Once a meeting point for thousands. Now a much quieter place.

Today, you can still visit RCA for a more relaxing party experience. Not as crowded per se. If you want to go wild, there are better options like Thonglor, Sukhumvit Soi 11, Khao San Road, and Silom. But if you really want to let loose here, it’s still possible.

Now that you understand what you’ll get, here are the recommended party places.

1. Onyx RCA

Location:Onyx Bangkok
Opening hours:9.00 PM – 2:00 AM
Website:Onyx RCA
Phone:+66 (0) 81-645-1177

One of the best modern clubs in the area. With top-tier light and sound technology, Onyx stands out among the rest of RCA. Of course, the food and drink are on par with the vibes.

You might want to time your visit here to be around August 2024. It will be its 10th anniversary then. A special event could be waiting for you.

2. Old Leng

Location:โอลด์เล้ง 古龍 OLD LENG BAR @RCA
Opening hours:6.00 PM – 2:00 AM
Website:Old Leng
Phone:+66 (0) 81-255-4845

This place is nothing but legendary. It’s one of the few businesses that withstand the rise and fall of RCA from the beginning to the present.

Once the landmark of RCA, Old Leng still sticks with its original Chinese tea parlor interior and live Elvis music. You could say that most people go here for nostalgia’s sake.

Nevertheless, any newcomers are welcome. Old Leng presents a time-traveling trip to the past.

3. Route 66

Location:Route66
Opening hours:8.00 PM – 2:00 AM
Website:Route 66
Phone:+66 (0) 2-203-0407 or +66 (0) 6-394-0035

Yet another legend that has stood with RCA since the beginning. But unlike Old Leng, Route 66 has adopted the live DJ sound and light of the modern world.

It sees hundreds of visitors on a good day. Events and mini-concerts are still held regularly. Of course, each one is as lively and energetic as you expect from a nightclub.

What about other places?

Unfortunately, RCA is not as full-service as other nightlife areas now. The pub, bars, and party venues are mostly stand-alone deals. A quality hotel or restaurant to accommodate your party is rare. And that makes sense, considering the decline of businesses in the area.

So, plan your trip wisely when visiting RCA. If you’re too wasted to return to your hotel, a place to crash can be hard to find.

Royal City Avenue, the story of the past

It’s rare to see Thai people inviting friends to RCA these days. Most discussions concerning the area are about its history.

But if you want to visit Bangkok’s former main nightlife area, feel free to do so. The spirit of the old times is still there. Just don’t expect to see Silom or Sukhumvit crowds.

Like always, if you want to discover more about Thailand, stay guided with ThaiGuider. You might learn something you never knew about this unique country.

For Party lovers, Bangkok is a must-go destination. Its night colors and sound attract thousands of people to go out and enjoy themselves. But you might wonder which night street in the capital is the best to let loose. And the answer is, without a doubt, Sukhumvit Soi 11.

Sukhumvit Soi 11 is the best night street in Bangkok for many reasons. The night is always lively. It’s a nightlife hub with hundreds of pubs, bars, and party venues. Restaurants and street vendors line two street sides. Not to mention the sex tourism with gorgeous ladies and hotels available.

Basically, Sukhumvit Soi 11 has everything you could ask for from a night street. The question is whether you can find what you want. Read on to ensure that you won’t miss anything when you visit.

What makes Sukhumvit 11 the best street for nightlife in Bangkok?

Sukhumvit Soi 11, or Soi 11 for short, is… a lifestyle. That’s right. This street in central Bangkok is not just a location for party venues, hotels, and food shops. Soi 11 is always alive and ready to give you joy.

And here are the reasons for its No.1 title.

1. Party 24/7

As mentioned, Sukhumvit 11 is always ready. From sunset to sunrise and vice versa, this street never sleeps.

During the daytime, Soi 11 offers a myriad of restaurants, bistros, and cafes. You can find local and foreign places lining up the street — big names or small times. Not to mention huge shopping malls like Terminal 21, Emporium, and The EmQuartier. Enjoy your food, coffee, and shopping to the fullest.

Night time? It’s a full-blown party. Club, pub, bar, or dance floor, choose your poison, and let the light and sound take you through the night. Of course, you will get to meet new people from all over the world here. Everyone comes for the same reason as you: to have fun. So, let loose. No holding back.

Once exhausted, you’ll need a place to crash for the night (or the following morning). Hotels, hostels, and guesthouses are right there waiting for you. And if you feel extra spicy, love hotels are available as well. Prostitutes are always there. You only need to know where to look (like at a corner of a bar or a neon-lit back alley).

Basically, Sukhumvit Soi 11 is a hub of all things entertainment. Food & drink. Party. Shopping. Accommodation. It has everything available at all times.

2. Easy to get to

Located in the center of Bangkok, Sukhumvit 11 is the most accessible area to drop by from anywhere.

Taxis and motorcycle taxis are always an option. Many buses, like No.2, 3-54, 4-39, and 511, also stop there. But if you’re not a fan of traffic, the BTS Skytrain and MRT underground train are also available. The closest stations are Nana for the BTS green line and Sukhumvit for the MRT blue line.

In short, you can go to Sukhumvit 11 anyhow you like. It’s in the city’s center, so you can’t miss it.

3. Prices for everyone

At first glance, the Sukhumvit district might look like a high-end modern downtown. And it is. Most of the real estate here prices seven digits minimum. Only the rich live in the area. However, not everything is expensive.

The restaurants, bars, and hotels are varied in price. From over-the-top luxury to backpacker-friendly budget venues. You can always find something that suits your wallet.

And don’t worry about feeling out of place. Even though it’s a fancy part of the city, people of all backgrounds flock here without a care for their status. So, enjoy.

The Rise of Sukhumvit

Before understanding Sukhumvit Soi 11, you should gain insight into the Sukhumvit District.

And frankly, the story of the area is quite vague. Not because of some mystery or anything. But urbanization and development happen too quickly for anyone to make a record. Sukhumvit today looks totally different compared to ten or even 5 years ago.

Nevertheless, let’s dig up the dirt and find the origin of its rapid development.

The origin

Sukhumvit District got its name from one of the 4 main roads in Thailand — Sukhumvit Road. This road connects Bangkok to the eastern provinces, like Rayong, Trad, and Chanthaburi. (Source)

The road’s significance is remarkable in recent history. Why? Well, eastern Thailand is a seaport. Meaning: international trade usually happens here. Connecting the trade site and Bangkok would speed everything up, economy-wise.

This road facilitates transportation and communication to and from Bangkok and the rest of the world. So, it’s no wonder people would settle down on this game-changing road right after its construction.

The change

After the road establishment, communities came in the late 1930s.

The first group with the funds to buy lands around the road were nobles and investors. They bought the empty land cheaply and settled down. It was meant to be a community for the rich to enjoy the distant shoreline hills (back when it was not packed with skyscrapers). (Source)

Fast forward to 1999. The BTS Skytrain extended to the Sukhumvit district, making transportation from inner to outer Bangkok even easier. Tons of new businesses like shopping malls and other facilities sprout up monthly. But the real game-changer is the hospital.

If you’re familiar with Thai history, you might have heard that the Thai medical facility is world-class — not only because of the staff and treatment quality but also affordable price (compared to the Western world). And since the Sukhumvit road was heavily related to foreign trade, foreign investors would never overlook the opportunity.

The lifestyle

With top-notch facilities in the area, foreigners started flocking in. At first, they looked for a place to settle down near the hospital and trade site. The locals saw the demand and constructed condominiums and other housing to accommodate them. Needless to say, they were rented out in a heartbeat.

So, new condos keep popping up in Sukhumvit according to the ever-rising demand.

Following the condos come entertainment venues targeting foreigners. And it just happened that Sukhumvit Soi 11 was the remaining area for bars and clubs in the district. So, these businesses are concentrated here. Thus, the start of the best nightlife street in Bangkok.

Today, Sukhumvit Soi 11 is known for its night parties. It welcomes local and foreign night wanderers from dusk to dawn with lights and music. You can almost say that it has already forgotten the medical significance of the past.

Food, drinks, music, entertainment: Khao San Road has everything for you. Some even say this little Bangkok street is a must-go for night wanderers. Not to mention the daytime destinations that attract both locals and foreigners. But what exactly makes Khao San the wildest and most famous street in Bangkok.

Khao San Road’s wildness is double. First, the day-night difference. Thai culture enthusiasts can explore the nearby market and temple during the day. But upon sunset, it’s all party. Second, the number of nightlife venues. Bars, clubs, and restaurants of all sizes and styles are concentrated here.

No matter what type of tourist you are, you can find something on Khao San Road. Read on and discover Bangkok’s most famous and wildest street right here.

What is Khao San Road?

khao san road signpost

A quick clarification before diving further. Don’t let the name fool you. Khao San Road is actually not a road. It’s a street.

The locals call it “road” because the Thai language only has one term for “road” and “street.” And apparently, “road” is way easier to pronounce for Thai people. So, when the locals say “road,” they could mean a city street — as in the case of Khao San Road here.

Now that the misunderstanding is clarified, it’s time for a brief explanation.

Khao San Road, to most people, is Bangkok’s nightlife district where you can eat, drink, date, party, and sleep over from sunset to sunrise.

Located in Phra Nakhon district, close to the Royal Grand Palace, it’s a sweet spot for any travelers to rest after exploring the home of the nobles.

Bars, clubs, party venues, and hotels are jam-packed here. Night wanderers from all over the world come to have fun every night. It’s hard to estimate how many tourists this district attracts per year. But “a ton” would be an understatement.

Despite its popularity as a tourist destination, you might be surprised to learn that the origin of Khao San Road was nothing like the present.

How did it start?

Khao San Road, aka Khao San Street, was established during the reign of King Rama V (1868-1910) with a completely different purpose in mind. (Source)

As the name suggests, it was a district where merchants came to trade rice (an essential part of Thai cuisine). Yes, “Khao San” means rice in Thai. And Khao San Road was meant to be the largest rice trade site in the capital. And it was.

The trade was profitable enough to spawn numerous other related shops. For example, charcoal stores and torch vendors.

How did it change?

Around the 200th anniversary of Bangkok (1982), foreigners started flocking to the area looking for places to crash in between their journeys in the capital. This is thanks to the tourism boom of the time. And not only did travelers come here, but also the film shooting crew from Hollywood.

As a result, Khao San Road’s reputation skyrocketed.

The locals would rent out parts of their homes to foreigners, hence the start of the guest house trend in the country. And with the staggering amount of tourists, people in the area took this opportunity to convert their rice trading business into hospitality, making more money.

With more and more guest houses, hotels started popping up. And with such a change, restaurants, bars, and other entertainment follows. Consequently, the street’s reputation shifted from a rice trade site to something else. And… Well, you already know where this is going.

What to do on Khao San Road – Daytime?

Ask the locals “What is there on Khao San Road during the day?” The usual answer would be “nothing but a scorching sun.”

It’s no surprise they say that. Khao San Road wasn’t as bustling as the last century with all the business talk and rice trading. But if you want to see the stark difference between its day and night, feel free to visit and explore.

However, what’s worth seeing lies in the area around the street. And here are 2 prominent destinations to visit.

1. Bang Lamphu Market

When you go to Thailand, you can’t miss the food they offer. And it’s not only Thai food but also Chinese and other Asian dishes.

Bang Lamphu Market, like other big markets in the country, is packed with a myriad of street food and restaurants that locals frequent.

If you want to know the raw taste of what Thai people really eat, this place is for you. No holding back or modifications for foreigners here. What’s served is as Thai as it can get.

Not to say that the food is ultra spicy or barely edible. It’s just the difference in taste and style as a whole. Authenticity, perse. If you like it, then great. But if not, that’s fine. But you’ll never know unless you try, right? So, why not?

And once you’re done eating, you can also shop. It’s a market, after all. A souvenir or two would be easy enough to find. As of 2023, according to locals, the place still lacks a must-buy product. But who knows? Your taste and theirs are different. Their “meh” could “wow” you one way or another.

2. Bowonniwetwiharn Ratchaworawiharn Temple

With hundreds of temples in Bangkok, it’s hard to distinguish one from the next. But this lengthy-named temple is a little more special than the rest.

The history of the place may not go as far back, but its significance is undeniably impactful. For Thai people, the temple is revered as the residence of all monarchs (from Rama IV onward) during their monkhood. (Source)

Another selling point of this place is the mixed architecture between Thai and Chinese. If you love unique building exteriors, this place will keep you exploring for hours.

Apart from these 2 places, there’s also a relatively new Bangkok City Library. However, as you might have guessed, most books are in Thai. So, you might want to skip it. But if you’re interested in Thai literature or reading culture, stop by and enjoy.

What to do on Khao San Road – Night time?

As mentioned, you can have a blast in Khao San Road once the sunset.

Most people come here to drink at bars or let loose on a dance floor. But that’s not the only thing. You can also find all kinds of shows and other entertainment here. And if you enjoy sex tourism, you wouldn’t be disappointed too.

One thing to note is that Bar, Club, and Pub are used interchangeably in Thailand. And they are relatively the same. All these venues offer alcoholic drinks and side dishes amid loud music, live or recorded.

If you’re British, please throw the definition of a Pub out the window. It’s way louder, flashier, and wilder here.

A quiet drinking place is relatively hard to find since each venue is so close to the next. And all of them blast music at each other. Nevertheless, you can find a nice and quiet place to drink if you know where to look.

Where should you party on Khao San?

With the capital’s name on the sign board, you can tell that the place has stood the test of time. (Otherwise, other bars would have taken such a competitive name away).

This bar has something for everyone — delicious food, drinks, pool tables, live music, and a dance floor. It’s also spacious enough to relax.

Most local reviews say that the food in this place isn’t just for show. They are restaurant-quality dishes to accompany your liquor. Moreover, the staff are friendly and service-minded, putting hotel personnel to shame.

Overall, Bangkok Bar provides quality time to everyone. And since it’s located in the bar-concentrated zone, you can easily bar-hop any time. It’s a great place to begin your night.

2. The Club

Open: 21:00 – 02:00 Everyday
Location:The Club
Call: +66 (0) 61-031-5070

If you feel like letting loose on a dance floor, The Club is your place.

Neon light and electronic music are the name of the game here. Locals recommend you to go after 11 p.m. for the fancy live DJ. nifvbvhrnhvtnnnnlvnbvclbndtlthjldire

The food and drinks, on the other hand, are serviceable. After all, people usually visit to have fun, not a serious meal.

You’ll probably feel right at home here since most customers are foreigners. But if you want to meet locals, it’s still a great place. Most Thai customers can communicate in English, so you can rest assured of the language barrier.

In short, visit The Club whenever you feel like heightening the mood. The wildness here won’t disappoint.

3. Bua Sa Ard Bar

Open: 17:00 – 00:00 Everyday
Location:บัวสอาด
Call: +66 (0) 97-235-7934

If flashy colors and bass-heavy music isn’t your forte, you might enjoy Bua Sa Ard Bar.

A more calming style for a nice sip of liquor and pleasant conversation. Not to say you can expect a jazz bar kind of atmosphere. It’s more of an open-air alley kind of vibe.

Since the name is Thai, you can probably guess it would appeal to locals. And that’s true. The customer ratio tends to lean on the Thai side rather than foreigners. The music is also Thai-heavy. Not the traditional kind, though.

Bua Sa Ard’s strength lies in its chill atmosphere. Feel free to visit with a person of interest. The vibe here could enhance your one-liner to the next level.

Where can you stay on Khao San?

1. Tales Khaosan

Location:Tales Khaosan (Cafe & Hostel)
Average price: 400 THB (11.50 USD)
Call: +66 (0) 97-090-6241

More often than not, you would be hanging around all night rather than crashing in a hotel. So, your need for a nice room would be minimal. And that’s where Tales Khaosan comes in.

Essentially, it is a hostel with bunk beds and a shared bathroom. Sounds normal, right? However, the first word you would utter upon first sight is “train.”

Yes, this place’s interior is designed to look like you’re traveling on a night train. The gimmick is cute and attractive for many backpackers, local or foreign. It earned a 4.6 star on Google reviews.

And once you’re ready to check out, you can enjoy a nice drink in their cafe too. To get rid of the probable hangover.

2. D&D Inn

Location:D&D Inn Bangkok
Average price: 1,000 THB (28 USD)
Call: +66 (0) 2-629-0526

Not to be mistaken with the Table-top RPG game, Dungeons and Dragons. This D&D is a hotel.

It’s a more pricey but comfy option than the previous one. However, it doesn’t mean that the price tag is unreasonable. You can get a room as cheap as around 500 THB (14 USD).

The selling point of this hotel is arguably its location. The building stands right in the center of Khao San Road. And it’s close enough to the Emerald Buddha temple that you can see it from the rooftop swimming pool.

It also has a hotel bar that offers quality drinks in a quieter environment (in case you’re not here to party).

So, if an easy commute is what you’re after, D&D Inn is your go-to.

3. Dang Derm Hotel

Location:Dang Derm Hotel
Average price: 1,000 THB (28 USD)
Call: +66 (0) 2-629-2040

Dang Derm is a Thai term for “traditional” or “old-school.” With that said, you can probably tell what this hotel looks like.

Yes, it’s a hotel where the influence of the traditional Thai sense of beauty is heavy on the interior. The mix of wooden vibe and modernity blends nicely in this place.

Of course, it sits right in the center of Khao San Road. So, going in and out for a party wouldn’t be a problem.

If you want to stay at a more Thai-looking hotel during your party trip, look no further than Dang Derm.

Khao San: The Wild and The Famous

As you can see, Khao San Road really has everything for everyone. No matter what kind of tourist you are, you can have a great time on this world-renowned street. The range of things you can enjoy here is beyond wild.

Make sure to be prepared for the possible hangover, though. You don’t want to end up like the movie The Hangover 2.

Have you ever heard of ‘Sex Tourism?’ If you have, you might know that Thailand is on the top list of such countries. But do you know why Thailand is famous for its sex-oriented tourist attractions?

Thailand is famous for sex tourism because it has abundant options that serve the needs of sex-curious tourists. From go-go bars, cabaret clubs, massage parlors, and spas to brothels and the notorious ping-pong shows, people go to Thailand for sex because its red-light districts have something for everyone.

Even if you’re not interested in partaking in such tourism, you might want to know what it’s like. What makes Thailand sex tourism what it is?

Read on to discover the world of lust and desire in this unique country.

Why do people go to Thailand for sex?

When it comes to sex tourism, Thailand has everything. No matter how rare or niche your sex taste is, this country can scratch that itch.

Some of the services or shows can only be found in Thailand too. Like the infamous Ping-pong show.

If you don’t know what it is, the following question might give you an idea. “Can you play ping-pong (table tennis) without the paddles, but with your… vagina?” And you can probably guess the answer. It’s called the ping-pong show, after all.

Even such a unique show exists in this country. So, you can definitely find “your thing” here.

Moreover, the Thai sex industry isn’t only about the variety but the quality too.

Every sex-related business in Thailand has fierce competition. If you want your place to survive, you step up your game. The prostitutes will do whatever they can to provide the best services, including masterful techniques, decorations, and substance use.

The last one might sound dangerous to both the customers and service providers. But it shows how far the sex worker is willing to go to “please” you.

However, with high quality comes high prices. You need to pay extra for the top service, or it’s “pay less, play less.”

And that’s only the surface of Thai sex tourism. If you dig deeper, you will discover a darker side to the business too. After all, the sex trade in any country tends to attract issues such as human trafficking, kidnapping, scams, etc.

Some people go to Thailand to make deals on these shady businesses. And they make a ton of cash. However, if you’re not in the know, you will never see it with your own eyes. You can only hear about it in the gossip or local news.

So, sex tourism in Thailand is not only about pleasure. It can be about money too. This country really has everything.

Who goes to Thailand for sex?

The answer is quite obvious. It’s mostly men.

And the age range is wide too. Some young male tourists come to Thailand to enjoy themselves and go. And there are the so-called “sex-pats.” You guessed it. It’s ex-pats who stay for the sex. Mostly, this group is middle-aged men. But of course, there are the younger ones as well.

But why men? If Thailand really has something for everyone, why not women too?

Well… It’s the nature of these businesses. If you think about it, it’s simpler than you might imagine. When anyone says “brothels,” is “male prostitute” the first thing popping up in your mind? Probably the opposite, right?

Of course, “female prostitutes” attract men more than women. No matter how diverse the services Thailand offers, these businesses will still primarily target men.

And besides, Thai female prostitutes have a reputation for their beauty, personality, and skills.

For foreigners, Thai women are more… exotic.

They uphold different kinds of beauty and values. As a result, they are automatically a mystery worth exploring. And there is a superior female population in Thailand too. So, it’s comparatively easier to find female prostitutes here.

But of course, this doesn’t mean there are no sex tourists of other genders. After all, Thailand has everything. Some women come to have fun with male prostitutes too. Ladyboy prostitution and go-go bars are also a thing, so sexuality is not a problem.

Furthermore, there are “show businesses” that target audiences of all genders too. Like the mentioned ping-pong show. The drag queen and cabaret shows are also non-gender specific. You can enjoy these entertainments for their fashion and aesthetic.

However, no matter how you look at it, men are still the dominant sex tourists in Thailand. It’s just the way things are.

Is Thailand sex tourism legal?

Is it allowed? Yes.

Is it legal? No.

Okay, this might sound confusing. So here’s an explanation.

All forms of prostitution and related actions are prohibited by Thai law. Running brothels and similar businesses is punishable. However, the enforcement of this law is weak. The authority would let these businesses operate as if they don’t see them.

But why is that the case?

Well… deception is key. Most brothels operate under different fronts to appear legal — like a hotel, motel, massage parlor, or spa. This allows them to hide in plain sight. As a result, the police can’t do anything about it. They are technically legal.

And besides, Thai people understand that prostitution is not only about right or wrong but also survival.

You see, most prostitutes didn’t choose to do what they do. Their circumstances forced them to.

Everyone needs to work and make money. But since most prostitutes come from poor backgrounds, they couldn’t afford a good education. So, they lack the crucial skills the workforce needs. That leaves prostitution as their only choice.

After all, a physical body is a minimum requirement for the job. And everyone has that.

The pay, of course, is also as minimal as the requirement. But it’s enough to keep these poor prostitutes away from starvation. So, if you look at it differently, prostitution keeps these sex workers alive.

If the authority decided to abolish prostitution entirely, these people would be left to die in poverty. Thailand’s social security is far from ideal. Hardly anyone survives without a proper job and money here.

But if the government really wanted to get rid of prostitution, it needed to improve the citizens’ quality of life first. But with the current political turmoil in the country, it’s hard to say that will happen soon.

As a result, Thai sex tourism is “illegal” but “technically allowed.”

The truth about sex tourism in Thailand

Unfortunately, sex tourism is not the most moral thing the world has seen. And like most immoralities, it involves a hideous dark side.

As mentioned, most prostitutes are forced to work as sex workers. And sometimes, the things forcing them are not just poverty and the economy but other people.

Some parents are willing to sell their children to brothel owners for money. Why? Because unwanted pregnancy is also a massive issue in Thailand.

Many new couples couldn’t afford to raise a child. So when their kids were born, they had to find a way to rebalance their expenses. But what would happen if they can’t accomplish that?

Yes. Instead of sending unwanted children to orphanages, they chose to sell to brothels. After all, the latter pays better.

It may sound like a tragedy from TV dramas, but it’s real in Thailand. And surprisingly, this is not the saddest part of the story.

Some human traffickers even kidnap pretty boys and girls and raise them into prostitutes.

In the early 2000s, news about mysterious van kidnapping children terrorized Thai parents. Few claimed that they later found their children as beggars on the street. But others weren’t as lucky.

Chances are these missing children became prostitutes somewhere underground. Some of them might even get exported to… who knows where.

These things happen daily in some dark alleys of Thailand, and the solution is still far from reach.

Moreover, this dark side doesn’t end with the prostitute themselves, but also the tourist.

Remember how fierce the competition in this business is? It’s so fiery that those who can’t compete, need to rely on trickery.

They would make a B-grade copy of their competitor’s services and offer it at half price. As a result, many tourists leave Thailand unsatisfied.

The prime example of this practice is the fake ping-pong show.

The real ping-pong show demonstrates more than just how to play ping-pong with your genitals. They also show “weight-lifting,” bottle opening, and much more.

The fake ping-pong show would give you less than half the experience. And some places even use tricks to perform.

Tips for sex tourists

The only tip you’ll ever need as a sex tourist in Thailand is “do your research.”

Even though Thailand has everyone’s niche, you might run into a scam. So, make sure you go to the right place at the right time to get the best experience.

One of the best ways to pinpoint where to go is to talk to the locals. They are the inside men, after all. Nobody knows better than them.

However, choose your conversation partner carefully. Or else you might run into yet another scam.

If your general destination is Pattaya, avoid asking Pattaya people directly. Why? Because they might have their own business. And they might try to convince you to go to their place.

Instead, talk to people who “have been” to Pattaya. They will give you more insight into what to do and avoid. They might share a first-hand experience with scams with you too.

Now. The problem is whether you can communicate with Thai people. If you somehow acquired Thai as a second language, that would be a cakewalk. But if you didn’t, that could be problematic.

Even though many Thais learn to speak English, only a few master it. Their English could be so broken you end up relying on their body language.

So, learning a few tourist phrases in Thai would be a solution.

What is Thailand trying to do to improve its image of sex tourism?

As of January 2023, not a lot.

Thailand remains in “denial” mode regarding prostitution and sex tourism. Officials often rebuff the current prostitution issue, as, after all, it is illegal in the eyes of the law. And being a Buddhist country, it is attested that it is impossible for such immorality to be occurring.

So, on a large scale, Thailand hasn’t done anything to improve the situation. And the Thai citizen doesn’t seem to mind it either. It’s business as usual.

On a small scale, however, voices from the younger generation suggest that “we should embrace sex tourism.”

The young Thai seem to think that prostitution should be legalized. Then, the country can fully profit from this business.

Thailand’s tourism has been declining for many years — especially after COVID-19. The country lost a bunch of tourists to its competitors like Korea, Japan, and even Myanmar. And it’s time to step up the game.

It might be a controversial move internationally. But everyone already knows that Thailand has “sex tourism.” So, better make something out of it.

Even though Thailand wouldn’t be the first country to embrace sex tourism, it will still be one of a few. And the young Thais believe that it will revive Thai tourism.

Of course, there hasn’t been any actual change. The young generation’s idea hasn’t been realized yet. And the progress is lackluster.

You can safely assume that nothing is going to change until 2025. Or even further than that. As of 2023, Thailand is too busy developing its domestic foundation to spare time for tourism of any kind.

So, is sex tourism good for Thailand?

Yes and no.

In its current state, Thailand still needs to handle prostitution more carefully. Even though the profit can be huge, the money doesn’t go to the country. It goes to shady figures behind the scene.

But still. Money is money. Generating cash can liquidate its economy and keep its people alive. And sex tourism still has the potential to bring wealth to Thailand. They just need to play the game right.

So, you have to wait and see what will happen. It’s too early to tell now.

Is prostitution legal in your country? Many nations prohibit all actions associated with prostitution, but some give you complete freedom in buying and selling such services. So, which side is Thailand on?

Prostitution is illegal in Thailand. Thailand’s law on prostitution is strongly influenced by Thai people’s Buddhist beliefs and traditional views on sex. However, prostitution is popular in Thailand as part of its famous sex tourism industry. Those offering or soliciting such services are unlikely to face prosecution.

But this is not to say that prostitution law has no impact on Thai society. It definitely does. Read on and discover the tale of the struggle between Thai prostitutes and the rule of society.

Is prostitution legal in Thailand?

As mentioned, prostitution is illegal in Thailand.

Thai law forbids all actions associated with prostitutes. Buying, selling, or running related businesses are punishable by fines, imprisonment, or both.

So, all the brothels and prostitutes you see are “underground.” In theory, they aren’t supposed to exist.

Now, here’s the question. Why?

What makes prostitution illegal in this renowned nightlife country?

Reasons why prostitution is illegal in Thailand

You can say that 2 factors give birth to this law: religion and Thai attitude.

1. The role of Buddhism

As you know, Buddhism is the primary religion in Thailand. It has so much influence that Thai people pass laws following its teaching.

Buddhists believe that there are five cardinal sins no one should ever commit.

  1. Killing (including animals)
  2. Stealing
  3. Sleeping with multiple partners
  4. Lying
  5. Drinking alcohol

As you can see, prostitution is the opposite of what the 3rd sin says. And since Buddhism’s influence in Thailand is so strong, most people agree that prostitution should not be legally approved.

2. Thai views on sex

The 2nd factor is the Thai general opinion towards sex. Or more specifically, towards virginity.

In the old days, locals thought women should reserve their virginity only for their husbands. If she failed, she would be marked as a… shame.

Of course, most prostitutes couldn’t preserve their virginity before marriage. So, they were automatically a shame to society. Wherever they went, they met with disdain and insults. The only people who treated them “relatively” fairly were their customers.

This negativity towards prostitutes has survived the test of time to this day. Even though most Thai people don’t insult prostitutes as much as before, it’s still awkward to converse with one as if nothing happened.

But why are there so many prostitutes?

As mentioned, prostitution blooms in Thailand as part of its famous sex tourism industry.

For various reasons, the law is not aggressively enforced. Even though the law says prostitution is illegal, the authorities don’t do anything to abolish them. Or more precisely, they can’t.

Why? Because technically, there’s no prostitute in Thailand at all.

But how? Well… There’s a loophole in this law.

Most brothels operate under a different front — like a spa or a massage parlor. This is enough to cover their real identity and hide from the police in plain sight. And the prostitutes are just workers in these “legal” establishments. So, nothing is punishable.

As a result, these spas enjoy a lump sum of profit from their customers who pay extra for the “special” service. Their business only grows and prospers. And the authorities cannot do anything about it.

And besides, Thai people understand that sexual desire is natural. So, they’re willing to overlook these shady businesses.

After all, brothels exist because there is a demand for prostitutes. If nobody bought their service, they wouldn’t survive.

However, this doesn’t mean Thai prostitution law is insignificant. It still affects society in various ways.

The impact of this law

Since the law forbids prostitution, prostitutes are considered unemployed in Thailand. This means the brothel owners can use various tricks and deceptions to reap more profit from their “employees.”

This includes hideous wages, zero job benefits, extended working hours, and massive quotas (minimum number of customers prostitutes need to find per day/week/month).

Some prostitutes are even forced to work. They were kidnapped or sold by their parents into this shady business.

As a result, most prostitutes struggle with poverty without any support. They cannot run to the police or any authority for help since they are illegal. And since they don’t have any health benefits, many are fighting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) too.

Most of their customers would turn a blind eye to their circumstances. Only wealthy clients would tip them a lump sum. And that is only when they have gorgeous looks or perform outstanding service. The run-of-the-mill prostitutes are doomed to struggle forever.

In a way, this law causes more problems in the country than it solves. It fails to prevent the existence of prostitutes. And it blocks all benefits from reaching these prostitutes too.

Many young Thais think that they should abolish this law and legalize prostitution. They claim that the country could profit from it. And the prostitutes would be well-treated too.

Will prostitution become legal in Thailand?

There’s a chance that prostitution will be legalized.

As mentioned, the younger generations understand how they can turn prostitution from an illegal business into a new form of tourism.

The potential is always there. And if the Thai can abolish this law, they can change Thailand’s economic concept. But it won’t be easy to accomplish.

What would it take to change this law?

First, young people must convince the elders that prostitution is just another job, not an evil incarnate.

Remember how seniority is a big tradition in Thailand? Whatever the elder says, most people would accept it and obey. So, if the young Thais want to make a change, they should start from the top.

But that’s easier said than done.

You see. Most elders in Thailand are religious and conservative. They aren’t likely to listen to new ideas, especially those that contrast with Buddhism teaching. So, it might take super charisma to accomplish this.

Second, they must convince the nation that those prostitutes need help.

Not only do Thai people turn a blind eye to their prostitute’s existence, but they also overlook their struggle.

Moral or not, prostitutes need fair wages, social security, and benefits. Young Thai must point out these issues to the public and change their views towards the industry.

Finally, they need to gain enough political power to change the law.

No matter how brilliant, without the power to realize it, an idea will remain just an idea. So, young Thais must play their cards perfectly in this complex game called politics.

What will happen if prostitution becomes legal?

If the new prostitution law were passed, these things could happen. (Keep in mind, these are just speculations.)

The good:

  • Improved life quality for prostitutes. The new laws would protect prostitutes as labor.
  • Better tourism on the national scale. Thailand can now fully promote prostitution as a tourist attraction.
  • More investments in the industry, both from abroad and within the nation.
  • Better health security for all. They need better health care to control sexually transmitted diseases.

The bad:

  • The internal conflict between the religious and the liberals. Since this law goes against Buddhist teaching, there might be a fierce confrontation between the two sides.
  • Increase in illegal entrance to the country. Prostitutes from neighboring countries might trespass into Thailand to enjoy all the benefits.

Law is relative

Now, you should understand the situation of Thai prostitution regulation. You might agree with the current law. Or you might not. But anyway, you can still experience prostitution in Thailand as is.

It’s illegal by the book, sure. But you won’t get arrested for it.

Is that a good thing? That’s hard to argue. But still, you can’t deny that Thailand is famous for this.

Like always, if you want to discover more about Thailand, stay guided with ThaiGuider. You might learn something you never knew about this unique country.

When someone says “Thailand,” “prostitution” might pop up in your head. Even though this topic is awkward to discuss, you still couldn’t help overhearing its relationship with Thailand in the gossip. But why is there so much prostitution in Thailand?

Thailand is known for prostitution due to its famous sex tourism industry and cultural history. Sex tourism is big business, and the financial incentives lure sex workers into the industry. There is a high demand from tourists frequenting the red-light districts and Thai men seeking their first sexual experience.

But what is the quality of Thai prostitutes that distinguishes them from the rest of the world? Read on to dive deep into the depth of Thai prostitution and the reason for its (in)famous reputation.

Why is prostitution so common and accepted in Thailand?

Without sugarcoating it, prostitution prospers in Thailand because it makes money.

The basics of business

Look at it through the “business lens.” Abandon all your morality. You will see that prostitution has a high potential to make a profit for both the prostitutes and the business owners.

There will always be a demand for prostitutes. Human nature dictates that everyone needs sex. So, it’s only natural that people will find a way to satisfy this need. And with such a demand, many “choose” to make money out of it. Become a prostitute or run a related business.

The prostitutes will earn income from “selling their bodies.” If their service is “extraordinary,” they might even get tips of four digits (in Thai baht, which is still high). And the brothel will also give them a salary, shooting their income even higher.

On the business owners’ side, they can earn cash from wealthy customers who love to pay extra for superb services. And the industry boasts a high amount of cash flow too.

So basically, if you put the question of morals aside, prostitution is just another business. You build up supply according to the demand and sell them to make a profit.

The dark side of the business

Of course, there is the dark side of the business to think about. Some prostitutes were sold by their families to brothels. Some were forced to do it because of financial problems. And some were blatantly kidnapped when they were young.

This dark side is largely thanks to the country’s poor economic management. If wealth flourished, probably no one would choose to be a prostitute. But since poverty plagues the country, many have no other choices.

And with a high number of prostitutes comes fierce competition. Each prostitute has to upgrade their “service” to survive in the industry.

As a result, many Thai prostitutes know how to “please” their customers. Some incorporate massaging techniques into their session. Others might even use drugs and substances to spice things up.

To this day, poverty is still a massive problem in Thailand. And that’s why you see many men, women, and LGBTQs forced to work as prostitutes.

The cultural history of Thai prostitution

In Thailand, like most other counties, prostitution has never been seen as a “good” profession.

The outlook

This “rough trade” has been considered a disgrace since the day of the Ayutthaya kingdom. People disdained anyone using their bodies as a means to make a living. You might have thought that prostitutes in Thailand had a high social standing like Geisha in Japan. But unfortunately, that was not the case.

This is due to the strong influence of Buddhism. Buddhists considered sex with multiple partners as a sin. So, it was no surprise that prostitutes, who needed to sleep with many, were looked down upon since the old days.

However, this prejudice didn’t stop this trade from flourishing in the country. Why? Because of the economy, of course.

The mechanics

Mostly, prostitution was more of a way to put food on the table rather than a proper job. In feudal Thailand, wealth usually belonged to nobles, the court, and land owners. So, what could the peasants do?

Yes, they could farm or trade all day, but that wouldn’t be enough. So, prostitution was the answer.

Back then, prostitution was limited to women. Male prostitutes were something unheard of since most men were needed as soldiers. They already received good pay. So, nobody wanted to be associated with prostitution (except when they needed the service).

But as time passed, many saw the opportunity in prostitution as a business. So, “proper” brothels were set up. They sought out poor pretty ladies, forced them into this rough trade, and enjoyed the profit themselves.

Throughout history, Thai people’s attitude towards prostitution hasn’t changed at all. Not until recently when locals see the domino effect of a bad economy. So, prostitutes are mostly seen as the victim of the system rather than the disgrace they used to be.

Is prostitution legal in Thailand?

In short, no.

Thai law forbids any actions associated with prostitution, including purchasing, trading, services, or owning the business chain.

Of course, the law doesn’t stop prostitution from blooming in the country. That’s because the law is not aggressively enforced for various reasons. So, if you go to a brothel in Thailand and purchase their service, please know that you’re partaking in illegal activities.

But you don’t have to sweat it that much.

Why? Because most police would turn a blind eye to anyone with a prostitute. And if they come to you asking questions, you can keep quiet and let the business owner do the “talking.”

If you think about it, the lack of law enforcement is, in a way, understandable. After all, sex is something everyone needs. But not everyone has the “privilege” of a proper partner. So, it’s more “advantageous” to the community to keep brothels around.

However, this law has proved problematic in Thailand. Why? Because it prevents prostitution from being a proper job. Consequently, many hard-working prostitutes earn less than they should since the law doesn’t secure their minimum wages.

Moreover, social benefits like health insurance or hospital check-ups for the industry are non-existent. This made STDs (Sexually transmitted diseases) like aids and syphilis plague the country for a long time.

Are prostitutes expensive in Thailand?

Unfortunately, there is no definite answer to this question.

The price you pay for prostitution depends on many factors. For example, the “quality” of your escort.

Some prostitutes are considered more “valuable” than others because of their skills or beauty. Some are so famous for these qualities that you must book weeks in advance. And these prostitutes will be pricey.

Another factor is the location. If you go to a famous brothel, the price is bound to be high. Some places even reserve their service for VIPs only.

Of course, you can find cheap prostitutes easily. But know that you get what you pay for. Their skills and beauty might be lackluster compared to the high-priced ones. But if you search thoroughly, you might find a hidden gem too.

The problem with cheap prostitutes is usually the STDs. Since they sell their body at such a low price, they couldn’t afford the best hospital service they need. And that created a hideous spiral of suffering.

Low income. Bad health. Poor service. Even lower income. Repeat.

So, pick your price carefully before you purchase. And if possible, tip the prostitute a lump sum. They are hard workers like you — they deserve more than their base price.

4 Famous Red-light Districts in Bangkok

Bangkok might not be the biggest capital on earth. But it’s definitely dense and populated with people of all backgrounds. And, of course, that includes prostitutes too.

Here are the 4 popular red-light districts in Bangkok:

1. Patpong

If you talk about the red-light district, Patpong is the first place coming to mind. Or at least it used to be.

How famous was this place? There’s even a song describing it as the “destination” for foreigners. The lyrics depict a conversation between a local man and a Westerner named Tom. It goes…

“Tom. Tom. Where [did] you go last night?

“I love Muang Thai (Thailand). I like Patpong.”

“(The prostitutes might have charmed Tom, huh?)”

“I love Patpong, I love Muang Thai (Thailand)!”

คาราบาว – เวลคัม ทู ไทยแลนด์ [Official Audio] (Source)

Recently, Patpong’s popularity might have dropped a bit. And that’s understandable. Hundreds of brothels and other competitors have popped up throughout Bangkok.

But still, Patpong is considered one of the destinations for red-light tourism.

2. Ratchada

If you’re looking for a non-conventional prostitution experience, Ratchada might be a place for you.

The selling point of this district’s prostitution is the “bathtub” setup.

Of course, you can still find bathtub brothels somewhere else. But Ratchada is famous for its bathtub service that includes massage, drinks, and much more.

The downside of Ratchada is probably the price. You’re not just paying for the prostitute but for the bath too. And that can get expensive. But if budget is not the problem, you might want to try it out.

3. Nana Plaza

Prefer the vibe of cabaret clubs to brothels? Nana Plaza is your top choice.

It is more of an entertainment complex than a red-light district. But of course, you can easily find prostitutes here.

And if that’s not your cup of tea, bar girls are always an option.

Enjoy your drink. Get drunk in the conversation. Vibe with the music. And lost in the neon light.

4. Soi Cowboy

Go-go bar is the name of the game here.

As mentioned, Bangkok is populated with people of all backgrounds. That means it has something to satisfy everyone. And if LGBT bars are your preference, you must go to Soi Cowboy.

As a foreigner, you might feel at home in Soi Cowboy more than anywhere else. Why? Because most customers of this small street are international tourists and travelers.

And if prostitutes are not what you are after, the light and sound are enough to get you going all night.

Thailand prostitution “fun” facts

1. Prostitutes are men’s teachers in bed

Sex is an awkward topic in Thailand. So, almost nobody talks about how to perform the deed properly. Even official education does a poor job of explaining to teenagers how they were born.

So, how can Thai men find sex experience in a land where most ladies value virginity? Go to a brothel, of course.

Many Thai males lose their virginity to prostitutes. They consider their first prostitutes their teachers because these ladies introduce them to the ‘real’ world of sex.

Thai men even have a slang “Keun Kru” describing the act of purchasing their first prostitute.

“Keun” means “to get on top.” And “Kru” means “teachers.” So this slang means to get on top of your teacher. And that makes a lot of sense.

2. “Dek Sia”

As mentioned, some prostitutes are more precious than others. And those on the top-tier need to be handled with care. Why? Because, usually, they are “Dek Sia.”

This term is used to describe prostitutes under the patronage of wealthy and influential figures in the area. “Dek” means a child or children. And “Sia” is a rich man.

Generally, you don’t want to use the “Dek Sia” service since they are pricey. And besides, you wouldn’t be able to. A connection to the said dominant figure is required to know the prostitute in the first place.

3. Not all Thai women are prostitutes

Many Thai women — especially those living around red-light districts — have experienced “the incident.”

“The incident” refers to having a foreigner walking up to them and asking “how much” out of nowhere. And as you can tell, this is extremely rude.

Never ask a woman’s price if you’re unsure whether she’s a prostitute. And even if you know, you still should never ask that way. Just contact the business owner, or wait for her to engage you. Have a civilized conversation first, then ask for a price (in a roundabout way).

Prostitution: The curse and the cure

As mentioned, prostitution in Thailand flourishes because of poor economic management. However, selling one’s body is still a solution to survival for many.

Thai people understand that money is a big deal. Even though it’s illegal and immoral, they still let prostitution grow in the country. Otherwise, many lives might have ended.

Hopefully, Thailand can legalize prostitution and provide all the health security these hard workers need. But until that day, they still have to depend on the customer’s pocket.

Bangkok hits the mark when it comes to nighttime festivities. You can genuinely embark on the journey of discovering the two sides of Thailand. One such aspect of Thailand includes the calm and reserved vibe of night markets and dinner cruises, while the other side is home to vibrant party culture and exotic energy.

There are a few things you will notice upon your nighttime adventure, including various play dynamics. You will find it simple to spot how nightlife works in Bangkok by knowing the tricks. Night markets, clubs, and exquisite dinners are just a few of the different vibes to discover.

Let’s look into the various aspects of Bangkok nightlife and why it is well-known for becoming ‘alive’ during the night.

What happens in Bangkok at night?

A few trips around the city will give you a unique perspective on what goes on behind closed doors. When it comes to particular activities, you have to be careful whether or not you are opting for a simple, fun night out or the chance to take someone home. By understanding the tricks and scams, you will have fun playing by the budget and understanding all the techniques.

Thailand is well-known for its massage parlors and professional salons; however, when it comes to nighttime services, you never know if you will be getting a regular massage from a working girl or what some might term a ‘happy ending.’ In particular, you will find many women around the streets of Bangkok hoping to meet guys and spend the night with them.

What is so special about Bangkok nightlife?

The brilliant implementation of diverse drinking spots and hangout locations has created more prominently well-known nightspots in the city.

Khao San Road:

One notable and popular attraction is Khao San Road. It is the place to eat, drink, and dance the night away. It is simply one of those places in Bangkok that everyone knows, whether for setting up a date night or having fun with friends after a long day. The place is packed with expats, tourists, and university students. The road is open from 7 pm to late at night. Although it can get rather crowded, it is best to visit the place around 9 to avoid long lines for restaurants, clubs, and bars.

When discussing such a prominent area like Khao San Road, you can define it as seeing through the good, the bad, and the ugly of what nightlife brings to Bangkok. The area brings in the positive aspect of timeliness; it is open all night long; there is no such suggested time for when you can hang out in the city. However, it is also not as cheap as it once was; at the same time, you can enjoy a nice local meal for as little as $10.

A bit far from the main city center of Sukhumvit and Silom, Khao San is made for those who don’t mind getting used to the crowded sphere and rather a messy drinking and partying culture (1).

The Full Moon Party is an annual celebration paving the way for new year celebrations and events celebrating party culture. Thousands of people from all over the world come to Thailand to experience multicultural events.

Known for music, sex, and drinking, the Full Moon Party has received international recognition. Yet, this can come with its consequences. So, can it be “dangerous”?

The Full Moon Party can be dangerous. With reports of theft, assault, and murder, there’s a chance that you could have a potentially harmful experience. However, there have also been positive remarks towards the party as well. It is important to take care of yourself and try to remain cautious.

When planning your next or first trip to the Full Moon Party, you should consider the historical background and the activities that take place. There have been records of dangerous encounters that might change your decision or make you cautious when experiencing the adventure for the first time.

What is the History of the Full Moon Party in Thailand?

What is now known today as the Full Moon Party is a popular destination for party-goers every month of the year? Located in Koh Phangan, the party has now become a multicultural event that attracts thousands of people from all over the world (4).

The history starts back when settlers came to the island. The first inhabitants were believed to be Hainan Chinese; they loved fishing and gained valuable resources working at tin mines around the island. You might have heard of Koh Phangan because it neighbors places such as Koh Samui and Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand (4).

Long before the early 1900s, it was very unusual for tourists to visit the island due to limited transportation options. Later on, Koh Samui began to promote and increase its tourism business. Around the same time, the arrival of tourists led to the construction of the first-ever bungalow in Koh Phangan (4).

It is believed that the first Full Moon Party happened around the late 1980s on Haad Rin Beach. A group of hobbies huddled around a campfire, played the guitar, and drank alcohol till the morning. This was the start of the very “first” of the mystical parties that paved the way for the Full Moon celebrations to come (4).

Full Moon Party as an International Phenomenon

Around 30,000 travelers descend towards the shores each month, hoping to enjoy a night of drinking and dancing. Under all creativity lies humble beginnings. At the start, groups of travelers and sound systems brought different styles of music to bungalows. The arrival of electricity and commercialization drew people to the island (2).

In the 90s, before social media was a significant phenomenon, tourists already talked about the Full Moon Party. People from all over the world would come to Thailand to taste the crazy beach party life. At some point, the coastline of Haad Rin became full of hostels, music, and bars. Techno, drum, bass, dance, house, reggae, and blues were the most common forms of music.

Events were made to capitalize on the success of the Full Moon Party, where most of the tourist industry benefited from that counterpart. Today, the party is stronger than ever. Despite dangerous happenings, the party remains an international event.

The Wild Side of the Full Moon Party

Backpackers became interested in the event as it gained more popular recognition. The main attractions at the party are the fire skipping ropes, drag culture, and alcohol buckets (1).

The Nation describes the party with “loud psychedelic flyers and posters all over the island-the Half Moon, the Black Moon, the Shiva Moon – and each one a bacchanal of all-night techno music, half-naked foreigners, and unabashed drug and alcohol indulgence” (1). The party can get wild rather quickly, which is why it is not for everyone-for familiar residents or farmers; it is another sleepless night (1).

The Full Moon Party is also featured in international films such as The Beach and Last Stop for Paul (1). Additionally, the party is featured in the Thai film Hormones and the subject of one of Comedy Central TV Show episodes. Furthermore, Stacey Dooley’s documentary on Tourism and the Truth in 2011 also discussed the beach (1).

Koh Phangan itself is an ecstasy-driven island. The island is famous for marijuana, heroin, magic mushrooms, opium, ecstasy, LSD, amphetamines, and other designer drugs. Moreover, there are dozens of beaches and health retreats. The southern part of the shore has cigarettes, dogs, and remains in debris (1).

Efforts to Shut Down the Full Moon Party

At the start, there were efforts to tolerate the signs of advertising, such as with a special mushroom omelet or amphetamine tea (1). However, there was a limit to collateral damage. Immigrants saw that the Full Moon Party was on the verge of a breakdown. Drug dealers began to go to guesthouses with marijuana. The governor of Surat Thani spoke of trying to keep control of the people but finding no way for them to listen (1).

Moreover, the number of crimes increased during the Full Moon Parties. There have been more muggings, robberies, assaults, and sexual attacks on tourists in recent years. There have also been break-ins with party-goers away from their rooms (1).

Tragic Events at the Full Moon Party

Foreigners are quick to warn you about the potential dangers of attending the Full Moon Party while on your trip to Thailand. For one, the British Embassy warned that western tourists had been victims of gang attacks in Koh Pangan (1).

The region is mainly known for murder during the night, in 2004. Three girls were gunned down in a fight on Haad Rin beach. Other attacks mention an Israeli tourist of 31 years of age being stabbed eight times with a knife. In 2008, an Indian tourist was stabbed while breaking up a fight during the Full Moon Party (1).

Murders became very common in the region. On New Year’s Eve 2022, a British tourist named Stephan Ashton was shot dead (1). He was only dancing with his friends at the beach bar when he was caught in a fight between a group. The suspect caught in action was found with a homemade gun (1).

There have also been other tragic events that have caused injuries during the party. At least one man has reported dying at the Full Moon Party, while dozens left with severe burns due to firework malfunction (3). The event had around 10,000 to 30,000 people during a New Year’s countdown for 2017. Out of nowhere, the fireworks display sent burning embers into the crowd.

Participants of the party, Madison Reidy, only 21 years old, explained the moment she felt stinging sensations in her arms, legs, and face (3). Another party-goer called the evening a nightmare. People were trampled over each other as everyone tried to get out of the situation as quickly as possible (3).

7 Quick Tips for Surviving the Full Moon Party in Thailand

Of course, many events could be potentially dangerous, but there are ways we can attend while aiming to be cautious of our surroundings. Here are some tips that can get you through the party unharmed! (5)

1. Pace yourself

It is essential to pace yourself when it comes to time. Most come to party relatively early, get to drink, and do not witness the best of the events. You should avoid getting fully drunk and wait to experience the sunrise with a few cocktails (5).

2. Wear proper shoes

The worst thing you can do is not wear appropriate shoes for an event like this. Flip flops are not your go-to, especially with the fighting and potential dangers of getting your foot cut on grass. It is a better option to wear trainers or pumps (5).

3. Be careful with buckets

The Full Moon Party is popularly known for having buckets of drinks. However, they can potentially hurt you or even kill you. You should purchase buckets from a vendor near the clubs rather than buying them for low prices. The cheap buckets might not be of absolute alcohol or sealed correctly (5).

4. Book ahead of time

When traveling to Koh Phangan during the busiest season, it is essential to find pre-accommodations. Most hotels require you to stay a minimum of 3 nights, so it is necessary to plan, depending on your price range and duration from the Full Moon Party.

5. Bring a change of money

Unfortunately, it costs money to pee at the Full Moon Party. This means you should probably bring loose change if you do not hope to end up in any emergencies (5).

6. Do not bring a heavy bag

You may lose your belongings when spending time at a crowded location. It is better to bring a small purse to keep loose money in your clothing (5).

7. Try out body paint

The Full Moon Party can be rather dark and scary. At times, you would want to be wearing something luminous and bright, especially if you are planning to go as a group and need to find your friend (5).

Conclusion

All in all, the Full Moon Party is an adventurous and exhilarating experience for any party-goer that wants to drink and dance the night away. However, yes, the Full Moon Party is dangerous. There have been accounts of tragic incidents that have left dozens of arms and many dead. It is essential to be aware of these incidents before making the serious decision to attend a risky partner. Even then, there are helpful tips you can follow if wanting to go to the party, safely and consciously.

Let’s dive into some of these options and why rooftop bars are a must-visit (3).

1. The Roof-Sala Lanna

Location: Sala Lanna Chiang Mai, 49 Charoenrat Road

The Sala Lanna Hotel is a newly opened resort at the bank of the Ping River. With rustic decor and dozens of suites, The Roof is its specialty. The restaurant is specifically famous for its cooler weather (3). There are long beach stools and low tables, which can help you relax by the pool. After 18:00, visitors from outside the hotel can also take a swim (3). As for the decoration, The Roof is decorated with candles and lanterns, serving cocktails starting at 290 Baht (3).

2. Xanadu Rooftop Pub & Restaurant

Location: 17/F Furama Hotel, 54 Huay Kaew Road

Located on the 17th floor of Furama Hotel is the Xanadu Pub, a good restaurant full of surprise meal courses and cocktails (3). Thanks to the hotel being on the west side of the city, you can catch a view of the famous Doi Suthep Mountain – including the temple glowing during the clear night. If you prefer to dine indoors, the restaurant also offers The Grill Room, with romantic energy (3).

3. Myst-Maya Shopping Mall

Location: 6/F, Maya Mall

If you are looking for a more convenient and multi-purpose area, there is no better place than the Maya Shopping Mall. Offering shopping brands worldwide, you can look through stores and then find yourself back on the Myst Rooftop Bar (3). Located on Nimman Road, this location also views the Doi Pui Mountain. Open from 18:00 onwards; you will find a wide range of gifts, starting at 300 Baht (3).

The most popular item on the menu is the rainbow shot mix, which comes in seven different colors shots with dry ice (3).  Besides that, you can also order beer or non-alcoholic drinks.

Night Bazaar

If you are looking for a family-friendly location, the night bazaar is the perfect destination. The main venue for shopping in Chiang Mai, or we might as well say all of Thailand, is on the local streets (5). Located at the intersection between Chang Khlan Road and Khor Road are beautiful stalls full of various items. The perfect time to visit is around 18:00, after sunset, until 22:30 (5).

Let’s consider some of the interesting items and aspects you should consider while night bazaar shopping.

What to Buy:

Night bazaars are packed across the sidewalks, spilling into the streets. Vendors sell almost anything you could think of, from clothes, shoes, accessories, electronics, CDs, DVDs, books, jewelry, antiques, art, souvenirs, kitchenware, and furniture (5).

You will find copies of designer wear, custom-made patterns, and hand-tailored Thai silk in the clothes department. It is important to remember that you spend wisely; most items at night markets are of low quality and are sold at affordable prices (5). However, there are also pricey items with solid durability that can last you long. Moreover, you might also find some unique treasures worth spending your money on. These specialized markets have an endless supply of Thai culture that you couldn’t possibly explore in modernized models.

Bargaining:

The first thing you should remain cautious of in Thailand is your money. While this might not always be the case for locals, tourists often get manipulated into spending more money. It is important to remember that night bazaars rarely follow a fixed price; you have to bargain for the best deals (%).

This is often the best way to spend nightlife in Chiang Mai – convincing the shop owner that you would only buy their product at a reasonable price. It is often the case that buyers would confide in lower amounts, especially if you are looking to leave or have not received customers the following day. A few jokes and patience will get you items at low-cost and convenience (5).

Food:

What better way to experience nightlife in Chiang Mai than local street food? In this city, we are all for mid-spree snacking wherever possible. The night bazaar offers some of the best restaurants and bars at high and low prices. You can practically find everything from local Thai street food to fancy restaurants (5).

As for the foreigners out there, night bazaars are also conveniently located by Starbucks, McDonald’s, Subway, and other international fast food chains (5).

Clubbing

Chiang Mai has a diverse culture for nightclubs. Outside the old city and Thailand’s capital lies a famous culture for pumping clubs. The epicenter of these clubs are located at Nimmanhaemin, a trendy road for local students and tourists (1).

Here’s some of the most popular clubs in this area!

1. Warm Up Cafe

Location: 40 Nimmanhaemin Rd, Chiang Mai

The number one club in Chiang Mai is called the Warm-Up Cafe. Although it can be a bit noisy and crowded, it is the pure definition of nightlife in the city. The multi-zoned venue features a Thai slash-club experience (1). With couples, pre-drinking students, and techno music, you are also welcomed by an alfresco terrace with acoustic music.

Moreover, the large room at the back of the cafe belts out Thai pop; buckets of ice, whiskey bottles, and boxes of free popcorn are handed out as the room jumps to EDM music (1). There is also a soundproof dance room on the left side. After 22:00 on weekends, it is almost impossible to get a spot inside the club, so it is best to book before 18:00 days in advance (1).

2. Infinity Club

Location: Off Soi 6, on the main Niman Road

The Infinity Club is the closest you will get to a European experience in Chiang Mai. With impressive lighting and green laser beams, the club has an excellent quality sound system for local and international DJ’S (1). Being extremely packed on the weekends, you will find it better to book a table in advance. The timings are from 22:00-3:00 (1).

3. Zoe in Yellow

Location: 40/12 Ratvithi Road, Chiang Mai

Another famous club is a backpacker destination called Zoe in Yellow. Located near Tha Pae Gate, you can find clubs on the T-shaped road, off Ratvithi in Old Town. Since tourists are most likely near this location, it makes sense for them to spend time near a convenient cultural spot (1). The club features Top 40 dance music cheap drinks and has a 90% young western generation vibe. You will likely find that the tourists are dressed in neon shorts from the Full Moon Party (1).

Cabaret Shows

Another essential aspect of tonight’s culture in Chiang Mai is the Ladyboy Cabaret Show. Known as one of the most popular shows in the city, it is at the top of the list for visitors coming to Thailand for the first time (4). The performances happen inside the night bazaar and are dedicated to Thailand’s prettiest and liveliest ladyboys. They sing, dance, and put on a good show while wearing extravagant dresses, makeup, and wigs (4).

You will also find that the ladyboys bring people into the performance, asking for audience participation. This makes the event perfect for couples but also families. Happening at two times – 21:30 and 23:00, you can buy your tickets in advance (4). Tickets cost around 290 baht per person and come with a complimentary drink and snacks (4).

Dinner Cruise on the Ping River

A cruise is the best option if you are looking for a more chilled way to spend your night. The Ping River is one of the most romantic aspects of Chiang Mai, especially around dusk when you can embark on a relaxing dinner cruise (6). With delicious Thai cuisine, the boat passes through houses and temples lit up in lights.

The cruise is notable for its Riverside Bar & Restaurant, which offers traditional meals. You can also get convenient access to transportation services from the voyage back to the pier near your hotel (6).

The menu for the restaurant includes pork, chicken, and beef alongside vegetarian options such as coconut milk soup, spring rolls, and mixed fruit (6).

Conclusion

There is no doubt that Chiang Mai is as full of vibrancy as Thailand’s capital. Packed with reassuring and friendly people, you will get carried away through the night. Rooftop bars, night bazaars, clubs, the cabaret show, and the luxurious dinner cruises will blow your mind beyond wonders. Whether it be for a casual drink out, a drunken night to not remember, or a chance to learn about Thai culture, you can find nightlife all around the city.

Guest friendly hotels are a fast-growing chain of unique hotel services around South East Asia. With excellent prices and room for extra visitors and friends, they are also referred to as “girl friendly” or “no joiner fee” hotels.

You can look forward to enjoying your location, with no worry about who you will bring back. Let’s be clear to avoid any confusion – what does a “guest friendly” hotel actually mean in Thailand?

Guest friendly hotels are affordable rentals for single visitors. While most hotels require a joiner fee, Thailand is packed with such hotels that allow you to bring back casual visitors to your room, free of cost. They surround the region from the main city, mountain regions, to the famous beaches.

If you are looking forward to inviting a lady guest or friend back to your room, then keep reading on to learn more about guest friendly hotels and some of the best ones in the Thai marketspace. From Bangkok to Pattaya and Phuket, guest friendly hotels are the best option for adventurous tourists.

Introduction to Guest Friendly Hotels

The best hotels are those that give extra convenience and comfort. Pattaya is a famous area in Thailand, commercializing hotel rooms for single men (1). Called guest friendly hotels or joiner-friendly hotels, these rentals precisely give all the freedom you could ever want. They are also known as work girl friendly, bar girl friendly, and call-girl-friendly (1).

Guest friendly hotels do not require a joiner fee; a fee most hotels charge for when you have “outside guests” who are not registered within the hotel (1). On the other hand, guest friendly hotels do not charge any additional joiner fee. Especially for a popular location like Pattaya, you can enjoy the nighttime experience as well as the opportunity to meet new people (1).

1 to 3 star rated hotels can cost you around 600 baht while the more expensive 4-5 star hotels cost as much as 1,500 baht; still a lot cheaper than your usual hotel (1).

Joiner Policies In Thailand

Since most hotels require a joiner fee, it is likely that you will have to check-in when bringing in a partner or friend. Guest friendly hotels might be more suitable if you are looking to tag along with a close friend or long-term girlfriend/boyfriend, rather than for bringing in a different date along every night (1).

Every hotel in Thailand has its own terms and conditions for bringing back visitors, such as a maximum number of joiners allowed. Most guest friendly hotels in Pattaya would allow you to stay alone in a double room, with one joiner free of charge (1). Other hotels allow two visitors, in regards to the capacity in the room. For the third person, there might be a joiner fee. These hotels also carry requirements of age; a  minimum of 18 years old to 20-21 year olds are allowed (1).

One of the hilarious components of such services is that you still have to report your visitor to the front desk (1). Although this can be embarrassing when bringing in new people, it allows the hotel staff to check for security precautions while taking a look at their ID card or passport. The best part is regions like Pattaya offer the same prices for single and double occupancy rooms (1).

While this might sound strange, some hotels only cater to “adults only”; particularly for those near nightclubs and Walking Street; The Classroom Hotel, Galaxy Suites, and Secrets Hotel are just a few of the popular ones (1).

Cheap Guest Friendly Hotels in Phuket

Open for tourism to people from different nationalities and ethnicities, Thailand requires the need for catering to a large population of people from all over the world. Before booking your hotel, it is important to take note of what activities and destinations you hope to explore and discover. Going on vacation with family is a completely different experience than traveling alone, with your partner, or with close friends.

Phuket is one of Thailand’s nightlife destinations. There is no shortage of nightclubs, go-go bars, and beer bars (3). With drinks, partying, and music, hotel fees can get rather pricey without warning. With extra charges for unexpected prices and unpleasant costs, you could end up spending more than intended (3). When it comes to guest friendly hotels, you can opt for spending less while also bringing people back to stay with you.

Phuket is home to cheap guest friendly hotels in the three sections of the city: Patong Beach, Kata Beach, and Karon Beach (3). Patong, for one, is home to luxury guest friendly hotels as well as cheap and affordable rentals (3). The Royal Paradise Hotel & Spa is rated a 7.7/10, while the Summer Breeze Hotel is rated a high 8.6/10.

However, cheaper options such as the Orange Hotel or Forest Patong Hotel are also rated at the same number but are the most cost-friendly options (3).

Examples of Guest Friendly Hotels Around Thailand

Bangkok is home to thousands of hotels, from affordable hotels for solo backpacker travelers to the best luxury hotels for couples and friends.

The best-recommended ones are guest-friendly rentals with excellent facilities that are great value for your money. Most commonly in the center of Bangkok are the popular guest friendly hotels of Sukhumvit.

Conclusion

To conclude, guest friendly hotels are basically an open opportunity to welcome anyone home. While famous in Thailand, there are various guest friendly hotels across Southeast Asia, such as in the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Dominican Republic, Madagascar, and even Tanzania, South Africa (4).

As social activities continue to increase, there will be an endless amount of resorts and luxurious destinations. However, when it comes to an average person wanting to travel for simple enjoyment, guest-friendly hotels mean having all the possible fun at a low cost.
